Bennet writes the Soap Box column for the Santa Monica Daily Press and is a regular contributor to Huffington Post.  In 2007 and 2008, Bennet was awarded the top prize for online commentary (2007) and print commentary for smaller newspapers (2008) at the Los Angeles Press Club's Southern California Journalism Awards (SCJA).

In May 2010 he was named as a finalist for the 2010 SCJA s for Journalist of the Year (Print Media under 50,000) for his writing for the Santa Monica Daily Press and for Corporate/In-House Publications for the Internet Law Center's Cyber Report newsletter.  This is the 10th SCJA nomination for Bennet as he has also won Second Place for Online Journalist of the Year (2009), In-House or Corporate Publication (2008) and Online Commentary (2006) and Honorable Mention for Blogging (2009).

Beginning with Rhode Island Senator Claiborne Pell's 1978 reelection campaign, Bennet has been active in politics for over 30 years and was Co-Founder of the Democratic National Committee's Saxophone Club, its young professional outreach and fundraising arm, from 1992 to 1998. Bennet was an alternate on the Los Angeles County Democratic Party Central Committee from 2001 to 2002 and a Democratic Business Council representative at the 1996 Democratic Convention.

Bennet has provided political analysis and insight to television, radio and print media ranging from CNBC to the Washington Times.  In 2009 he teamed up with conservative political consultant Jim Ellis to provide spirited left-right commentary with a dose of humor for live events, radio and television and the pair were weekly featured guests on one of BlogTalkRadio's top political talk shows.

Bennet launched BushLies.net in January 2003. The blog was cited in John Dean's Worse Than Watergate and other publications and praised by Columbia Journalism Review for being one of the first to see Iraq deceptions as part of Bush's M.O.   

 

Bennet also is a contributing author to Big Bush Lies: 20 Essays and a List of the 50 Most Telling Lies of George W. Bush  (RiverWood Books 2004).

Bennet is also one of the leading U.S. internet attorneys, founder of the Internet Law Center and Co-Chair of the California Bar Cyberspace Committee.  He is a popular speaker on the latest developments in Internet law at conferences throughout North America.

BACKGROUND

Bennet grew up in Providence, Rhode Island as the youngest of seven children.  His father, Paul Kelley, was a World War II veteran who served twenty-five years as Assistant Public Defender for the state (and is the first inductee to the Rhode Island Public Defender Hall of Fame). 

 

Bennet has a B.S. in Political Science from The American University and graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center.  Prior to getting his law degree, Bennet worked as a Legislative Assistant for one of Washington's leading lobbyists, on financial services, nuclear waste and privacy legislation among other issues.

 

In 1994, Bennet was selected by the German government to participate in the Worner Seminar pairing young leaders from the United States and Germany.  That same year, Bennet moved to Los Angeles after 13 years in Washington, D.C.
